Birding Calendar November to April: Prime birding season when Palearctic migrants join resident species, pushing bird counts above 500 species. Dry Season which is considered peak season (June to September, December to February) The dry season represents the optimal time for wildlife viewing at Akagera. During these months, animals congregate around permanent water sources, making them easier to spot. The sparse vegetation improves visibility, and the lack of rain means better road conditions for game drives.
From Kigali Akagera National Park's southern entrance is located approximately 110 kilometers (68 miles) from Kigali, Rwanda's capital. The journey takes about 2.5 hours via a well-maintained paved road, making Akagera one of the most accessible safari destinations in East Africa. From International Destinations Kigali International Airport (KGL) serves as the gateway to Rwanda. The airport hosts regular flights from major African cities, European hubs, and Middle Eastern connections through airlines including RwandAir, Qatar Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, and KLM. From the airport, visitors can proceed directly to Akagera (approximately 3 hours) or spend time in Kigali before continuing to the park.
